Two of my favorite things in life are books and food. One nourishes the mind and soul, and the other nourishes the stomach. Both are essential for a well balanced being, at least in my opinion. It seems as if some people share this opinion and that is what brought me to The Travelers Restaurant in Union Connecticut.
I don’t think you can really go wrong with a diner. Eggs are pretty edible in just about any formation that you end up cooking them in. Paired with a club sandwich if its Lunch time, or a cup of coffee in the morning, this elixir of life has been a staple of American culture. The Travelers Restaurant mirrors this traditional platform with one amazing addition. Every free space is filled with books, and you are free to take up to three books after your meal. No strings attached, just browse around and take what you like. After your meal, you are free to go downstairs where a more legitimate bookstore resides. Many an old book sits and gathers dust waiting for the perfect mind to be consumed by.
You have to thank the employees for keeping this tradition going. “We spend a lot of time on book runs going all over Massachusetts, Connecticut, and sometimes Rhode Island,” said owner Karen Murdock in a Hartford Courant profile of the restaurant. All in all a great place to stop for a meal and a short perusal.
