Sometimes, the smallest towns hold the best treasures. What’s the saying? Good things come in small packages? Yeah, that’s it. That is the perfect saying for this town. We are in Metropolis Illinois, otherwise known as Superman’s hometown. This is a little bit of a stretch. In the comics, Superman lives in a city named Metropolis, but the name was probably the only thing they in common, until the town embraced the coincidence. They constructed a huge statue of Superman in the cities center, opened up a Superman Museum, and has an annual festival dedicated to the hero.
The museum is quite a dedication to the hero. They have crammed more in this small building than I could have imagined was possible. Absolutely every inch of the interior is covered with some aspect from the history of Superman. The original tv series? Check. The spin off comics? Check. Every iteration of the hero? Check. Legos and video games? Check. The Holy Grail? Yes. It’s here. The first appearance of Superman. Just to give some perspective, a good condition copy of this comic can sell for over $3,000,000.
