The sun is setting over the ocean as I drive over a suspension bridge . Hues of pink and purple escape from the clouds, reflecting off the water as if it were a sheet of glass. Tiny, quaint looking islands, lush with vegetation dot the distant waters. The only company they have are the fishing boats still out trying for todays catch. Bridge crosses over to island, and then back to bridge. The pattern repeats itself over and over. I can’t believe that I’m still in the United States. The entire atmosphere seems so different than the rest of the nation. I immediately feel at home and don’t want to leave. Where else could make me feel like this but the Florida Keys?
I don’t have anything bad I can say about the Keys. This is by far one of my favorite places on earth. Fresh seafood is everywhere. Turtle soup is abundant. The beaches are pristine and stretch off into the distance, inviting you get lost in exploration. Stop by The Southernmost bar for a libation and some conch fritters. The bar makes a perfect desk to get some work done in the most amazing office one could think of.
I was also surprised by the amount of wildlife in the area. taking a walk down a city street will bring you to countless birds. Roosters and chickens roam the streets, waiting for a bread crumb to be dropped by a tourist. Alligators and turtles fill the local waters, daring you to swim and discover what lurks right beneath the surface.
This really is one of my favorite places on earth. I dream about it on a regular basis and long for the day that I can make it back there.
