– – The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain
It was 1865, and Samuel Clemmons was dirt poor, living in the middle of the Californian Gold rush. He would scrape by by writing articles for local papers but after getting fired from the San Francisco Chronicle, he fled from debtors to Angels Camp, a nearby mining settlement. There he decided that he would become a full time fiction writer, and with the Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, Mark Twain was born.
A replica of his cabin stands where the original burned down years ago in a fire. To think that this small, one roomed shanty housed one of the 19th century’s greatest writers is quite a humbling thought. It goes to show how one can rise in this crazy world.
