Giant statues surround me. My senses explode as I take in the vast amount of colors. A story unfolds in front of me, each chapter represented by the next carving I come upon.
I come to what I believe the climax to be, a giant Buddha, 50 ft long, lying on his side. He is relaxed as he greets you, inviting me forward. Even though I don’t believe, I still feel an air of serenity surrounding him.
This Cambodian Buddhist Monastery is hidden in California about halfway between San Francisco and Yosemite National Park. As you walk around, monks quietly toll away at their chores, not paying any attention to you. You will quickly come upon the statues, each telling a snapshot of the Buddha’s story. Writings in Cambodian decorate the panels as well. Don’t worry, they are just acknowledgments to donors.
Hours could be spent getting lost here, meditating, reading, finding ones self. As the unique aura encompasses the entire property, it is begging to be explored.
