Another day, another art installation out in the middle of nowhere. These hidden gems are really what keep me going sometimes. I drive through miles and miles of nothingness, feeling alone and letting the desolation sometimes take over my mind. Then out of nowhere, I arrive at an amazing art piece. A person’s vision, that relies on the area and environment. More often than not, it is humbling. Today I am in Wendover Utah, at the Sun Tunnels.
When you first come upon the Sun Tunnels you may think that it is some type of weird, minimalist art. Four tunnels sit alone in the middle of the desert, seemingly not having any purpose. There are holes dotting the sides of each of the tunnels. What do they mean? Well, this is where it gets interesting. The holes are drilled into the sides so that when the sun shines through them, constellations are formed by the dots of light shining through to the inside. Furthermore, on both the Summer and Winter solstices, the tunnels are lined up directly with the mountains so show the sun setting.
Unfortunately, the day that I went, it was…. Wait for it…. Raining in the desert. So with the cloud cover, I wasn’t able to experience the Tunnels in their full glory. I’m ok with that though. It gives me a reason to come back on one of the solstices to experience them in all of their glory.
