Dusk was settling down upon the land as I was driving down the road. Suddenly, I saw a group of cars stopped along side the shoulder. I rushed out to se what everyone was looking at. Out of nowhere I saw it, an Arctic Fox camouflaged against the white wilderness, hunting some creature to small (or well hidden)to be seen. This is what I’ve been waiting for.
All day I’ve been astounded by bison, elf, hot springs and wonders beyond my imagination, but I’ve been looking for something more elusive. Something to make my voyage a little more unique. All of a sudden the fox jumps on its prey. Click click click goes every camera. All of the sudden my clicks stop. My memory card is full after a full day of shooting. I run back to my car as fast as I can, ripping through my bag to get another card. Luckily one is sitting right at the top. I run back to continue shooting. Crisis adverted.
Yellowstone was everything I ever could have dreamed of and more. I arrived the night before opening day, and snow still covered most of the ground. I had no clue what to expect, but was excited having heard about the park my entire life. As soon as I entered the park, a herd of bison appeared on the road in front of me, slowly appearing out of the fog as if the were part of a living film transition. They took over the entire road. All I could do was stop and wait for them to pass, as they walked right next to my car, close enough for e to reach out and pet.
The entire day was filled with moments like those above, whether it was a pari of bears, eagles chasing osprey, or elk grazing across fields. What really took my by surprise though were the hot springs. I never knew so many colors could exist in one place naturally. Brilliant blues, oranges, and greens melt into each other as bright red rocks pierce the waters surfaces. Clouds of mist rise off the boiling pools of water, adding an ambience that needs to be experienced to understand.
When will I be back? Soon. The park is absolutely massive and I could seriously get lost in here for days.
