Whenever I come across rock formations, I am filled with a sense of wonder. To look up at these monolithic formations, and to think about how they were formed and then to emmerse myself in that state of mind, makes me feel like I am back in the Triassic period. Just think about it. The ground used to be at the top of these. Centuries of wind and water slowly broke down the environment to form what stands there in front of me. I don’t considermyaself a spiritual; person, but in moments like these, I think I get closer to a religious experience than anything else can bring me to.
Monument Rocks is a group of natural chalk formations that lie in western Kansas. They reach a height of up to 70 ft. The monoliths were originally formed 80 million years ago when carbonate deposits were laid down during the Cretaceus Period in what was then the Western Interior Seaway, which split the continent of North America into two landmasses. It was this seaway that formed all of the great mountains and rock formations throughout the midwest. Crazy.
The monument lies about an hour south of Colby. it is on private land, but fortunately, the owners of the land allow people to visit it during all hours that the sun is up. And hey, who can beat something as cool as this for $free.99?
