If there is one thing that is ever pervading the news in our lives it is hate. All that is needed is to simply log into your social media app of choice, and you will be bombarded with articles and memes expressing emotions ranging from contempt to outright hate about something going on in this world. Today, my travels took me to ground zero of one of these hate groups, the Westboro Baptist Church.
The Westboro Baptist Church is a hate group hiding under the moniker of religious freedom and free speech. They are one of Americas primary anti-LGBTQ+ organizations and are not afraid to scream it from the roof. Their campus is covered with banners expressing their hatred of homosexuality, including verses from the Bible cherry picked to support their cause, and a huge sign outright saying “God Hates Fags”.
The most natural response would seem to be to fight fire with fire, hate with hate, but an organization named “Planting Peace” decided to make a different type of stand. A more loving type of stand. They bought the house across the street and have entitled it “The Equality House”
From the Planted Peace Website: “The Equality House is a symbol of compassion, peace, and positive change. The house, which is painted the colors of the Pride flag, serves as the resource center for all Planting Peace human rights initiatives and stands as a visual reminder of our commitment, as global citizens, to equality for all.”
Wow. These guys are my heroes. Stepping onto the property is a surreal feeling. I felt guilty even recognizing that the church across the street existed. I felt overwhelmed by the bigotry exhibited. But then I felt love and yes, true pride while walking across the lawn of the rainbow colored house. What a crazy experience. I wonder how the parishioners of the Baptist church feel when they look at it.
