Miles from the closest city, buried beneath the deserts of New Mexico lies an explorers wonderland begging to be explored. The Carlsbad Caverns are an underground paradise.
With the closest Supercharger being in Pecos Texas, I stopped here on the end of my trip through New Mexico. This is definitely a hidden gem that I would recommend.
You’ll start out above ground in the visitor center and then either take an elevator down, or (my preference) take the mile walk along the winding paths down into the moth of the caves. As the sunlight disappears and the echos of the caverns get bigger, the tempeture starts to drop.
Eventually the path opens up into wondrously huge caves covered in stalagmites and stalactites. Ever have trouble remembering which is which? Remember, stalactites hang “tight” to the ceiling!Â
Make sure you have time to explore! the self guided tour can take about 3 hours and the ranger guided ones even longer, but you will be gifted with an opportunity unlike any other!
Fun fact, there are 67 mammal species, 357 bird species, 5 fish species, and 55 amphibian and reptile species found in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. There are also over 100 rooms!
