Tumbleweeds blow across the road. Clouds of dust form whirlwinds racing across the barren horizon. Giant cacti dot the landscape as far as the eye can see. Welcome to Saguaro National Park.Just a short drive from Tuscan lies a wonderland plucked right out of a Wild West movie. If you’ve never seen a Saguaro Cactus in person, you’re in for a treat. The shear size of these things (average 16 ft tall but the largest on record was 46 ft), really blew my mind. I just never expected them to be this big.Â
It’s crazy to me how much diversity you can come across in the desert. There are six biotic communities in the park (starting from the lowest elevation) including desert scrub, desert grassland, oak woodland, pine-oak woodland, pine forest and mixed conifer forest. Average annual precipitation is approximately 12.30 in.
